Well i'm curious to know what fights your animal has gotten into and wonders how you prevent them from happening more often like my cat tends to fight with other cats and the last major fight he got into another cat had bitten him and he had ended up with an absses on his foot and i had to take him to the vet to get it drained but of course it cost me an arm and a leg, lol, grins.
He recently got into another one but i did not take him to the vet as i let it heal on its own like many other things he's had because of how costly the vet is so what do you do so that your animal doesn't fight so much so they don't have to end up going to the vet?
I'll be happy to hear your stories and suggestions too, thanks Amy.
I keep my cat indoor only. No other cats to fight with.
I'm gonna echo Alicia here.
If your cat goes out a lot, and keeps getting in fights, I'd try and make it an indoor-only animal. Being outside significantly risks his life. He's not going to win a fight with a car, after all. Or a large dog.
And I'm going to go a step further as cautionary example. If your cat got hurt and you let it heal on its own, as you said, because the vet bills are too expensive, yet you continue to let your cat go in and out apparently as it pleases? That's extremely irresponsible. Now, if the cat's injury was minor and it truly didn't need a vet, that's one thing, but that's not how you made it sound. If you can't take care of an animal's costs, within reason, then perhaps not owning an animal is a wiser choice.
Sorry, I have to speak here. If I had a cat, which I don't, I would keep it indoors because of where I live and because I'm blind-should the cat wander off or whatever, I can't go looking for it the way someone sighted would.
That being said, cats love being outdoors and while some might not miss it if they've never experienced it, it seems quite cruel to me to take that freedom away if it has already been established. Keeping the cat indoors while it heals does seem a reasonable thing, though.
Depending on where loves animals resides, it might be quite common to allow pets outdoors. I'm in the US and I grew up in the country and our cats were all indoor/outdoor as they wished. There is nothing quite like seeing a cat being a free creature. Indoor cats don't seem to have the same spirit. Yes, risks go up if you allow your cat to go outdoors and I would definitely say it depends on the area .
Also, I wonder if loves animlas' cat is an unfixed male? Or one who was fixed older rather than younger? A non spayed or neutered cat is more likely to get into fights as are those who are fixed as older cats.
Perhaps you could call the vet and see what ointment they recommend for injuiries from cat fights.
Another idea might be to get the cat to come in at night-seems most cat fights I've seen and heard were at night.
If your cat is declawed (a terrible thing to do) do not ever let it out. It is practically defenseless and that bull about the back claws being enough is just that, crap.
Ok this isn't a substitute for the vet. But honey is one of those home remedies that actually works. The Egyptians used it exclusivey on wounds. They found honey in an Egyptian tomb that was over 3,000 years old and dehydrated. Once they hydrated it, they saw it was as good as new.
I use it, and while a bit of a mess, it tends to keep wounds very clean. I don't know if you could put it on a cat, with their fur and all, but you could at least do that until you get to the vet which is hopefully soon.
Thanks for your reply's and i shall answer your questions and he is a desexed male with a microchip and all his claws as he came from the spca and the last owner whom had wishy had the same issues as i do as he was fighting with the other cat he was living with so he can not be with other cats and that was the reason for why he needed to be re-homed.
Yes in new Zealand many of us cat owners allow our cats to roam outdoors and i agree that it wouldn't be nice to not allow the cat to go outside when he is use to doing it though i do see the reasoning when they need to be indoors like for certain reasons such as having to recuperate from surgery or after a procedure done on them.
Wishy is doing well and i know i can contact the vet clinic to discuss the issues that are relating to wishy health as they would be able to decide whether he needs to come in and see them.or not.
Loves animals, there is a show on the Animal Planet TV network-not sure if you get it there, but I think it is called "My Cat From Hell". A pet behaviorist comes into homes where people are having issues with their cats. He helps them change their behavior and the cat's behavior. I know one of the issues he has dealt with is fighting. Perhaps you could check out some episodes and see if there is anything helpful for your situation. Good luck!
thank you and i shall check that out but you'll be happy to hear that wishy has been behaving himself and not getting into trouble and i think because he is staying in a bit more even though he is still going out, smiles.
